If you look at that and go, "Oh, yes, not worried!" then you are more calm headed than I am. Sirens should be going off at Nintendo. This is the time they need to start planning for the next platform that will probably determine whether or not they remain relevant in the west and that is not an exaggeration.
Agreed. The Wii-U is a failure, it ain't turning around. Nintendo is still a good company, but they dreadfully need to change their roadmap as their current way of doing things does not work. They need to re-invent themselves and play to their strengths while eliminating the weaknesses and bad choices.
What Nintendo does well:
- motion controls. The Wii was innovative and it worked.
- portable gaming. The 3DS had low numbers in Nov but it's still the best handheld out there by far, for now at least.
- they make good games.
What they do poorly:
- the gamepad with the Wii-U was a bad choice, it added cost that no one really wanted to pay for and added something most developers (including Nintendo) barely used.
- they don't output enough games. FAR too much gap between releases.
- their software genre diversity is much worse than it used to be. They need to vary up their games more to appeal to larger diversity of people.
- their online infrastructure and support is pathetic and out of date, they drastically need to bring this up to modern times.
Nintendo needs to start planning on their next console now, and plan it out
well. They need to play to their strengths and get rid of the weaknesses. In my opinion, this is what the next Nintendo console needs to be:
- make a new Wii but call it something entirely new. Give it up to date specs, with PC style hardware similar in architecture to both XB1 and PS4. Make it very easy for 3rd parties to port games to the system.
- include the motion wand and a standard "dual shock" style controller, a gaming device gamers are used to and love. Do not include another gamepad.
- make VERY sure the system launches with at least a half dozen solid NIntendo titles, covering a variety of genres. A new Zelda, a Mario Party game, Waverace, Starfox, a Pokemon strategy game, and Pikmin. Something like that, all on launch day.
- Make the new 3DS or whaterver the next handheld is work WITH the new system, similar to how the gamepad does now. Allow it to be used as a controller and have games able to utilize the 3DS display for bonus features when enabled. Don't make it mandatory, but make it desirable. This would replace the Wii-U gamepad functionality by utilizing their very own handheld, and boost sales for both of Nintendo's platforms simultaneously.
- use blu-rays / dvds as media. Have the system play blu-rays in HD. It's a standard, just do it.
- create on online small developer market, an indie scene, and release dev tools to make homebrew content both easy and practical. Let users create exclusive content to make the system desirable.
- Most Importantly, flesh out the development teams or hire new ones to crank out software faster. The dry spells need to diminish, don't depend on 3rd parties to carry the system.
Nintendo still has potential to be a contender in the future, but they need to change their ways NOW in order to right the sinking ship. If they don't, they will join Sega down the not too distant road...
