Xbox FY25 Q1 Gaming revenue up 43% up year-over-year; Hardware declined 29%

Sony will be beholden to them till they make these games.

If Sony really want to win, they will have to start producing Call of Duty alternatives out of its own studios.
Sony has already won. There’s no longer a hardware competition.

As for software, Microsoft bought out a pub with lots of properties. Only CoD has produced anything serious and it’s on Sony’s platform (selling more than it ever has on Microsoft’s).

Why do they need an alternative?

Use your imagination.

I dont wanna spell out everything. Its tiring.

Xbox making use of Bethesda / Activision Blizzard to propel its console business will be catastrophic for industry. As is proven by Playstation trying to make everything exclusive.

And you're just going to ignore Microsoft making games exclusive after the Bethesda acquisition?

They're only changing now because they need more revenue. Those games would be exclusive if they were selling 60M consoles. lol

Think you are right. Lack of competition will do that. I think Microsoft is sidestepping consoles because it just isn't working. Meanwhile, Sony not having a direct competitor in Xbox leaves them all alone in that space so there is really little reason to lose money on each console sold. Opposite reasons for this, but same result..
Just like Nintendo. They have no competition in their sector, thus their prices remain in the profitable scale and their games almost never get a discount.

How far does it have to decline until the line is negative as more people are actually returning consoles then buying them?

They've already won, but yes that's why they are going all in on the GaaS shite. They need one or two GaaS hits just in case after the 10 years are up MS stop making CoD available on PS (though that's looking unlikely with baldy calling the shots now and not Phil).

Series X console is generally heftier and feels more premium than PS5 when you hold it (I own both). It's also quieter in operation.

Microsoft did a very good job when it comes to designing these machines.
I own both and disagree (especially on silence since my PS5 is quiet), but that wasn’t the reason for my question since that’s preferential.

Sony don’t control their destiny and depend on xbox to drive revenue on their platform.

Thats some “victory”. More like a truce with unfavourable conditions.

That is hysterical, but no. This wasn’t some Kumbaya truce. Microsoft turned to PlayStation due to their platform’s failure….. caused almost entirely by them [Microsoft].

You really think if the Series consoles were in better shape any of those games would have hit PS5?

Their games are must play.

Just ignore internet, subscribe to gamepass, a lot of good stuff.

This is another feather in their cap.

They understand perpetual hype cycles are counterproductive in long term. Play games for what they are. Keep playing if you get hooked.

I did sub to GP on my PC but I ended up canceling it. It was fun initially but once I got through the initial titles I wanted to play there was nothing else. We can ignore the internet and everyone else but I think the market itself has spoken.

What MS owns now … is equivalent to nuclear warheads.

They don’t use it for good of mankind.

Hats off to them for showing restraint and deciding to cooperate.

Eh.....that works both ways. PlayStation needs third party publishers like Microsoft. Third party publishers like Microsoft need PlayStation. In terms of "nuclear warheads", the alternative to cooperation is mutually assured destruction.

Either way, none of that has anything to do with Xbox consoles. If we are going to talk about who is "winning" then talk about it in terms of where the two are actually competing.

They're financially obligated to, otherwise the board of directors would rain legal and criminal action down upon them. Intentionally sabotaging and losing money in a gamble to go scorched earth. That is not how sound business works.

You ruin all your relationships with other partners.
You get more oversight from governments on your backs, more restrictions and the potential to be broken up.
You lose the perception in the public eye.
You also lose your company and brand money, as well as partners money which has a detrimental effect on job loss, less tax revenue which invites everything mentioned above.

I really do hope you're just clever trolling, then well played and I can respect that. :pie_roffles:

Xbox revenue numbers were basically saved by Activision which is where all this revenue is coming from.

Sony depends on many factors to win...and yes one of them is getting over 30% of the revenue on every game that is sold on their platform, without acquiring anything from anyone. That sounds like a win for me. MS NEEDS Playstation for the acquisition to even make sense. COD's biggest source of revenue IS on Playstation as far as i know. (or it used to be).

Looking at these numbers like some sort of victory on MS when Activision basically swallowed MS's studios is weird. Of course after acquiring the biggest publisher in the industry MS has its revenue up.

What's interesting is that it's ALL due to the publisher they just acquired...meaning everything they are doing internally and thanks to actual MS is worth nothing in comparison. There's a reason why they hit the panick button and are now releasing everything on Playstation.

Now I can see why Phil called this acquisition his 'magnum opus, his career achievement.' They needed Activision to literally save the gaming brand.

So was Nintendo with Wii U. I think reality broke you.
A troll who can't even get his facts right...Nintendo posted a net loss of $230 million in 2014 .

Bye, Bye Troll
To make money, particularly lots of it, one has to profit.

The revenue is good, however.

Xbox isn't posting a net loss and that's all I'll say with you. I've had enough vacations for 2024 and need to focus on Christmas and saving up for Hawaii Feb 2025

Your demeanor says it all. Get over your fear of a real conversation. 🙂

On the adult side of things, revenue is up thanks to their acquisition of Acti. That’s not “making money”, but still better than dropping.

No, because people like you can give it, but can't take it back and then want people banned
I've had enough holidays or 'vacations' this year thanks

Give what? What legit, unmoveable argument have you presented that I supposedly can’t take? If it’s your petty insults, you’re right. I couldn’t care less. But, if it’s about the topic at hand, what have you presented that I didn’t (or couldn’t) tackle?

And, as for “wanting people banned”, again, I couldn’t care less and have never said anything of the sort. What happens to you is your problem. I’m here for the discussion. Are you able to refute my view on the revenue part of this conversation?

In other words, 100% of ALL Xbox Gaming revenue growth was due to the Activision acquisition. In other words, buying Activation wasn't just a nice to have.. they kinda had no choice. Not buying Activision would've killed the Xbox brand as they'd only experience negative revenue growth year over year until the next generation.

$70bn just to stay alive. Damn.

Only 7 percent and they had a boost the year before didn't they?
Reporting every quarter less sales than the competence is not failing. You’ve heard it first on GAF, folks.

You've heard it here folks, selling less than another company in your segment is a failure and you should give up entirely.

A hint to all businesses that they should definitely take on board.

Sell less phones than apple....give up.

Massive difference when those phones are sold for profit and your customer base is the entire planet. Sold at a loss and still losing market share ain't exactly killing it. And yeah, consistently losing to your competition matters. Doesn't mean they should "give up". Not sure who said that. But they need to change their strategy.

Lol this is laughable.

You should look at the history of MS strangling competition with their monopoly in enterprise.

The reason why they can't do it in gaming is
sony is much stronger and has more influence then they do in gaming. Warchest won't help them win against Sony.

Sony wins when they convert all those Xbox sales to playstatoon sales. Sony isn't winning if they continue to decline vs previous gens such as ps4. If they convert Xbox users to the playstation eco system then they are winning.

We need to see if that happens.
I own both and disagree (especially on silence since my PS5 is quiet), but that wasn’t the reason for my question since that’s preferential.

My xboxs are absolutely silent in operation. My ps5s are too unless you stick your head directly next to them. They both did a great job on the noise front this time.

Sony already converted large number of Xbox users over to playstation last gen. They already won last gen really.

Causal Xbox gamers aren't really going to pc, once Xbox consoles are dead they'll be headed to playstation. Realistically they won't be able to convert everyone and you know this.

You couldn't be more wrong, its the other way around. No PS! CoD (MS gaming division) will die and close shop next day 🤣

There's just no way 30 million Xbox consoles next-gen would satisfy their goals for what they want with Gamepass. They said they are pushing for 100 million GP subs by 2030. Most GP subs are from console buyers. NOT pc or steamers.
They also declared console has reached saturation, and PC Game Pass is their biggest growth potential. I suspect that's part of why they are de-prioritising their console hardware while talking about their next-gen being the biggest technical leap ever: they're clearly not expecting to sell 100 million Xboxes anymore.

It only reached that saturation because they (MS) themselves can't sell consoles anymore. And depending on PC GamePass to grow over the next 3-5 years is suicide. I'm sure they've done their research and understand that PC gamers are just different than console gamers.

I don't think they did a very good job with these machines. Preferences for the exterior are purely subjective. The cost/performance ratio of what's inside the machine determines whether they did a good job or not.

And on that front ...
  • Series X costs more than PS5, did not improve on the controller, does not support VR gaming, and yet often performs worse than PS5. That's pure inefficiency that negatively affected the bottom-line of the company.
  • Series S never reached its promised claims, caused several problems to several developers, delayed multiple games on Xbox, and continues to perform poorly in most games.
Microsoft could and should have done a much, much better job than this one, especially in a generation that's supposed to mark their comeback.
