Not sure if we win when Sony will inevitably have a strong monopoly on the console market. Sony with no competition would be frightening for consumers imo. Sure, we have Nintendo, but they are in their own world and the Switch 2 probably won't really be able to directly compete hardware-wise.
 
Never really bought into this PS4/XBox One gen being the one to lose for digital library reasons so Xbox Series lost.

If you go back to the end of the PS3/360 era, it was also said then that the next Xbox will win easy due to the digital library, xbox live and backwards compatibility that PS3 to PS4 wouldn't have, 360 had the US market and no-one would move from Xbox live and their library, yet they did and Xbox lost it all. They migrated despite everything in Xbox favour, the digital library and Xbox live held nothing in the end.

They're sending their historically core, pillar Xbox exclusives over to Playstation - Forza Horizon now, soon Halo and Gears, and then Fable. Those are the big 4 that defined Xbox since the beginning: Halo/Gears/Forza/Fable. Those will now be coming to Playstation. I'd say that's a big change, and a win for PS gamers.

I'm debating on upgrading my Series X to the next generation of Microsoft console when it comes out. My justification at this point to upgrade to the next gen of Xbox would be to avoid the situation where the internal SSD dies on the series x console resulting in the whole damn thing being bricked. M$ is pretty good about backwards compatibility so I can be rest assured my 360, Xbox one library will be safe and the very few Series games I own. I haven't purchased very many games on Xbox this generation due to gamepass and preference to playing on the PS5 due to the controller tipping the scale for me. PS5 Pro has pretty much sealed the deal in me never buying a Xbox version of a game for the remainder of the generation.

  • Put out an Xbox style Dual Sense
  • Put out a Dual Sense Mini
  • Release an officially licensed keyboard and mouse

invest in the platform that has a much larger library, gets superior versions of 99% of every game that's released on console because MS/Sony insist on devaluing their own platforms, has vastly cheaper ways of obtaining games, and has free online play, unless you're getting a top of the line PC, you will swiftly make up for the initial higher cost of building your own computer due to the reasons I listed

A Switch and a PC is all anyone needs, sony and especially microsoft are beyond washed

Oh no doubt about that, if you're a PS4-PS5 owner you're getting more games for sure, but I was talking in general, there was a time back before the Acti purchase where every shill was saying this was good because infinite MS would make games made by said Publisher so much better and even there would be revival of old IPs and such, in the end, the purchase didn't change anything for the better

The idea that people play their old games THAT much is a fantasy and a copout.

First off, 2/3rds of the industry is playing live service games that are either F2P or annual releases... So that library argument just doesn't carry water.

No one is playing NBA 2K18.

As you said, that the PS4 was so successful without BC is evidence that BC is probably somewhat overrated. I think it helps with individual games more than it helps with ecosystems. The Switch also won't play digital library games from previous generations... Again, hasn't mattered at all.

Phil made an excuse and people bought it hook line and sinker (quote die hard 3), but if anyone stops to actually think about it, it makes no real sense. BC had always been around more or less, so why would digital libraries make people stick more than physical libraries would?

The Steam Deck exists and isn't a console/portable hybrid. In that space, Nintendo largely exists on their own and have for quite a while. Guess what? The world didn't explode. It won't with PlayStation either.

Besides, no matter how much people choose to ignore it, Steam and Nintendo platforms are competitors to PlayStation. Anything that can take a customer away is a competitor, despite a difference here or there. It's not Sony's fault that their direct competition tripped over itself so much that it invited its own exit.

Caveman thinking. MS will never, but doesn't have to out sell Sony nor anyone else. On this forum as bad as the series consoles have been it brought in over 80 B in revenue. They also have windows pc's which btw has a larger install base than all consoles combined.

All they need to do is make a powerful console, (no bs S model), and fully support it with game and subscriptions. They will still never outsell Sony but they make profit.

Every time I read about "fans" happy about something they have no interest in get giddy over failure. The more completion, the more games, more places to play those games TURN PROFIT. It's not about "sales" but making profit. I seriously hope responses left by console warriors are no more than 1: years old. Otherwise it's time to think about life's priorities.

Steam Deck is a handheld much like Switch. Nintendo doesn't have some unique ability that other portables can't do. If Valve decides to make a home console(they won't) then Sony would have competitor in that market.

I'm a consumer in a few years looking for a portable. Hmm, do I want the Switch 2 or Steam Deck 2.(perhaps a Microsoft portable also). In a few years I'm a consumer looking for a home console. Hmm, do I want a PS6 or....well I'm getting the PS6 I guess.

Sony hs competition. Nintendo has competition. No matter how you divide it, they are all competing for people's wallets. That's a fact.

Yes, every consumer product on the planet is competing for your wallet. Lol. Now, if you want to argue Sony and Nintendo are in competition merely because they are in the video games business I would probably agree. However, The FTC in their antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft over Activision argued Nintendo was not a competitor of Sony and Microsoft though.

Nintendo isn't direct competition to Sony imo. I feel Nintendo's more direct competitor will technically be other portable devices like Steamdeck and Rog Ally as well as mobile devices. They can compete more directly with Sony if the hardware for Switch 2 is comparable spec-wise and depending how the device is marketed, but for most people Switch has typically been considered a secondary console so I'm not so sure if Switch 2 will change that.

They're all PCs built around HW designed for multipurpose computing.
PS5, Switch and PC all operate with the exact same PC UI and provide the same PC UX.
PS2's PlayStation's last true "console" with a console UI that provides a console UX.
Put in a game, press power and play the game.
Nintendo abandoned the console UI/UX for the PC experience and here we are.

FTC is right on some things,wrong on others. They usually lose by the time they get to Supreme Court though. Regardless, having one traditional console choice I view as a bad thing for consumers. Imagine if Xbox1 had been the only choice on the market with their many fucked up decisions that generation, and Sony wasn't there holding up used games and mocking Microsoft. That would have sucked for the consumer.

I'm wondering too. Been with them since their first console and although I don't agree with everything they do, I get a quality product (be it hardware, software, or services) for what I pay. That's what I expect from any business I deal with.

Xbox hasn't really been competition since the X360 though. They've had one successful generation out of four and even then, their sales numbers were propped up by hardware failures which also cost them dearly. The market has spoken when it comes to that platform.

Personally, I hate the argument that Nintendo isn't competing with Sony and Microsoft. I just find that sentiment ridiculous. Maybe it's just my inner Nintendo fanbot speaking.

Raising prices of PS Plus with virtually no improvements to the service.

Making PC customers sign up/register for an PSN account to play PlayStation games on PC.

Charging a $10 upgrade fee to get next generation enhancements on certain older games.

Don't they have the worst refund policy on digital games compared to the competition?

Big live service push ignoring older catalog of games even requested ones like Bloodborne.

Censorship on Japanese games.

We believe in generations.

All the console makers charging a fucking fee to merely play online certainly isn't pro consumer. You can't buy digital games on PS5 from Amazon, Best Buy, etc like you can on Switch, Xbox. Only PS store. Pretty anti-consumer.

Xbox wasn't very competitive that gen because they royally fucked things up for the Xbox1. They absolutely could and should have been competitive coming right after the successful 360. Fortunately consumers had the PS4 as an option though.
